Extreme Environments due 27.5.16

Extreme Environments

Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about the Polar Regions. In particular we have learnt about the differences between the Arctic and Antarctic, how animals are adapted to live there and how climate change is affecting these regions.

This week, your task is to choose an animal that lives in the Polar Regions and write a paragraph explaining how they are adapted to live in these extreme environments. Think carefully about the colour of their fur, where they live, what they eat and how they survive the cold.

  1. Arctic wolf

The Arctic wolf has fury fur and it is more camouflaged than a polar bear and a Arctic owl.why do baby seals look more cute than all the Arctic baby's.[there are no question marks on my keypad that's why there's a full stop].Does a Arctic wolf have red eyes or black eyes. By Haaris

  2. They eat fish and meat because they have nothing to eat in the ice island. They
survive from the cold by growing there furry hair so they get worm
    in the cold.

  3. Snowy Owls:

Snowy Owls are beautiful creatures. They live in the Arctic Tundra. These creatures are white to camouflage with their surroundings. These winter birds are seen in open country such as prairies, marshes and fields. They breed in coastal Alaska,Canada and Greenland. Snowy Owls weigh 1,963 grams and are 58 cm long. They have sharp talons and a sharp beak. It uses it's talon’s to to strike it's prey and it uses it's beak to pick the prey up and eat it. This bird is a carnivore and if their is extra food they store it on a perch. They eat their prey whole. The main food eaten by Snowy Owls are lemmings and mice. They also eat rabbits, seabirds and fish.
Unlike, most owls that hunt at night Snowy Owls hunt in the day and the night .

Predators to the owls are humans, foxes, jaegers, dogs, wolves and larger birds. They have thick feathers to keep themselves warm in the bitter cold.Dependence upon lemming population ecology, which might be impacted by global climate change. Low lemmings abundance can result in high mortality of young owls due to starvation. They can turn their head all the way back! Isn't that AMAZING!😊

  4. My Polar Region animal is penguins because I know a lot about them. Do you know that a penguin is a kind of bird that cannot fly; the largest penguin is an Emperor penguin and their weight are 37 kg and they are 1.15 metres tall. Some people wonder if penguins seep or not. They do sleep with their flippers out to help them retain their body temperature. When penguins find food for themselves they eat their pray very quickly so they get warmth.

  5. Penguins spend a lot of time dealing with temperature They are warm-blooded just like people with body temperature of about 100 degrees F.
So how do they stay warm in the cold place they live and in the icy cold w

  6. The Arctic Hare lives in the harsh environment of the North American Tundra. Arctic hares do not hibernate but have a number of adaptations to survive the extreme cold climate. They have a thick coat of fur which is a brilliant white colour in winter that provides excellent camouflage in the snow. In spring the hare's colour changes to grey which blends in with the rocks and vegetation. This change helps hares to hide away from its predator. Arctic hares may dig shelters in the snow and huddle together to share warmth. Arctic hares survive by eating woody plants, mosses and lichens in winter and in other seasons they eat buds, berries, leaves, roots and bark.

  7. My favourite polar animal is Antarctic penguins. No penguins live at the North Pole in Arctic. Penguins mostly live in southern hemisphere. There are 17 different types of penguins live worldwide and 7 of these species live and nest in Antarctica. 16 of these penguins live in southern hemisphere while only one type of penguin called Galapagos penguin lives in northern hemisphere near Galapagos Islands. They can drink sea water as well as ice cold water. They are flightless birds even though they have wings, while other birds have wings to fly they have adopted flippers to swim. Penguins in Antarctica have no land based predators to prey on. They spend half time on land and half time in water.

The male penguins protect their eggs on their feet till they hatched, while the females prey for fish and other sea animals. They return to the same nesting site with the same partner every year. Baby penguins can’t go on the ice for more than a minute because they don’t have much fur yet. Baby penguins have to walk between their mother or fathers feet instead. Tall penguins are called emperor penguins which can grow up to 4 feet and can weigh up to 30kg.

  8. Antarctic penguin:
penguins only live in the Antarctic no penguins can live in the north pole in the arctic. When a mother penguin borns a new baby penguin it sits on is mothers legs and helps it to walk penguins feet don't freeze on ice because there feet are rubby.there mother gets food puts half in its mouth and half for the baby.

  9. The Arctic fox lives in some of the most frigid extremes on the planet but does not start to shiver until the temperature drops to −70 °C (−94 °F). Among its adaptations for survival in the cold is its dense, multilayered pelage, which provides excellent insulation, a system of countercurrent heat exchange in the circulation within the paws to retain core temperature, and a good supply of body fat. It has a deep thick fur which is brown in summer and white in winter. Its body length ranges from 46 to 68 cm (18 to 27 in), with a generally rounded body shape to minimize the escape of body heat. The Arctic fox preys on any small creatures such as: lemmings, voles, ringed seal pups, fish, waterfowl, and seabirds. It also eats carrion, berries, seaweed, insects, and other small invertebrates. They are well adapted to their environments because their fur is white and the ice is white so it is camouflaged.

Penguins are my favourite polar animals. They can help the little penguins because the babies cant even walk.Under there feet they have fur to help them walk and also on their body to protect them from cold.Penguins are the only birds that can swim but cannot fly. These black and white seabirds move about very easily in the water. On land they stand upright and waddle about. There are 18 types of penguins mostly found in cool regions. They eat fish and other sea animals found in the water.Penguins breed in large groups called nesting colonies.they use there bodies to help them slide on the ice and in the water.

  12. Narwhals' are very rare for their tusks. The tusks are used for jousting and fun games. Their tusk can grow up to nine foot long. They also look like unicorns in the water. Narwhals eat squid, fish and shrimp. There are up to 45000-50000 Narwhales. They can hold their breath to 10 minuets and
    they can dive 50000 ft.

  15. Killer Whale
Known as Orcas. They are immediately recognizable by their black and white color. It can live up to 50 to 80 years. It size is like normal bus. From 23 to 32 feet(7 to 9.7 m).It weighs up to 6 tons(5443 kg).
They live primaly where the water is cold but can live anywhere from the polar region right up to the equator.Killer whales eat seals, sea lions, fish, sea birds, turtles, octopuses and squid.
Killer whales use sound waves that travel underwater to communicate among its members. They use ecolation for hunting.
Killer whales are also known to shelter injured or ill members of their pod from the dangers.

  16. Polar bears, have white skin to match the snow so the can catch there prey. Polar bear have a thick layer of fur ti keep them warm.
Polar bears use their feet to swim in water. Polar bears love the cold if it became hot it would be horrible the bears love the cold,

  18. My favroute polar region animal is the polar bear. They live in the Arctic Circle and they spend a lot of time swimming in the sea. The polar bear is a big animal. They can weigh up to 700 kg. Polar bears have fur to keep them warm. This fur is white to camouslage them in the snow and ice from their prey. They like. to eat seals, the remains of walruses and whales. The polar bear is very powerful animal, however they are becoming endangered because the ice is melting.

  19. Where they live
Harp seals live in Antartica the coldest place on earth. They adapt to their enviormnent by having short ears and a short tail to make sure they loose less body heat. They also have thick flubber to keep them warm in these cold conditions. They use there short tail and ears to keep there body warm at all times.Baby harp seals are taught how to swim often to stay on land for a less amount of time or they might freeze or die.The mother seal keeps the baby seal warm by letting the baby seal in the water for most of the time.In the polar regions the water is warmer than the land most of the time.It is perfectly adapted to its envoirment by doing all these things to survive.
    What they eat
Harp seals are carnivores they eat fish and crusteans .They crush the crusteans to eat them with there flat teeth.Harp seals swallow there food in large chunks of meat it is very dangerous for us we would need a very wide mouth and swallowing skills otherwise we might choke to death. They gulp it down in seconds. They use bubbles to catch fish by blowing in a certain part so the fish swim away and the seals can catch them quickly. If a seal is not the fish can swim away from the hungry seals that are not fast enough to catch fish who swim away from the seals who are to slow to catch them.

  20. 1) Polar bears are found in the frozen wilds of the Arctic, in Canada, Alaska (US), Greenland, Russia and Norway.

    2) These are seriously big bears, gang. Adult polar bears can measure over 2.5m long and weigh around 680kg. Their huge size and weight make them the largest living carnivores (meat eaters) on Earth!

    3) Polar bears are well adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on our planet. As well as their thick fur, they have a layer of fat, called blubber, that insulates (protects) their bodies from the frosty air and near-freezing water. Polar bears also have black skin under their glistening coat, which helps them soak up the Sun’s rays and keep warm.

    4) These magnificent mammals have an incredible sense of smell which they use to track their favourite grub, seals*. In fact, their sense of smell is so good, they can sniff out prey from up to 16km away!

    5) Despite their size and bulk, polar bears are excellent swimmers, and have been spotted in waters over 100km offshore. They can comfortably swim at around 10km/h using their slightly webbed, 30cm wide paws like paddles in the water.

    6) Although good swimmers, polar bears aren't quick enough to reliably catch seals in open water. Instead, they depend on the ice as a hunting platform. They wait near seal breathing holes or at the ice’s edge for a seal to surface. They then snatch if from the sea and...gulp!

    7) Did you know that a polar bear’s fur isn’t white? It’s actually transparent with a hollow core that reflects light. This helps the bears blend in with their surroundings - a useful trick, especially when hunting wary seals!

    8) Female polar bears give birth to their cubs in snow dens (in November or December), where the family is protected from the harsh Arctic environment. At birth, the cubs are only around 30cm longand weigh around half a kilogram - that's about the same as a guinea pig!

    9) The polar family emerge from the den four to five months later. The cubs will stay with their mother for about two years, during which time they learn the skills needed to survive in the Arctic.

    10) Sadly, these incredible creatures are classified as 'vulnerable'. The biggest threat to polar bears isclimate change. Rising global temperatures means that sea ice is melting earlier and forming later each year, leaving polar bears less time to hunt for food. But the good news is you can help these amazing animals!
