Tudors - rich or poor?

This week we have been learning about the differences between the lives of rich and poor people during the Tudor period. Write two paragraphs about whether you would like to live as a rich or a poor person during the Tudor period and why. Try to give at least three reasons and explain them in detail.

  1. Rich Or Poor Tudors
I would rather live as a rich Tudor.
The reason why is because they had shimmering emeralds all over
their dresses and the emeralds shimmered every ten seconds.
Rich Tudors showed that they were rich by their houses and things that costed lots of money. However I don't want to be a Tudor because they only did a bath once a year, but rich ladies had a hole in their gowns to rub herbs to smell themselves nice and there used to wear so many layers of jackets on them.
Poor had to struggle for food and houses. There are no comforts that we are having today in our daily life.Tudor toilets are called 'Privies' but not private at all.Poor people called tissues leaves or moss and wealthier
used soft lambs wool as tissues. It was usual for school pupils to attend school for 6 days a week but as a result we attend school only five days. Can you believe that in Tudor period boys began school at the age of four and moved to grammar school at the age of seven?? Girls were either kept at home by their parents to help with housework or sent out to work to bring money in for the family.

  2. Poor Tudor`s
I would not like to be a poor Tudor because of two reasons, 1. Because they wore leather clothes! 2. Because they would have to be out all the time and that would make you have a sun burn.
    Rich Tudor`s
I would like to be a rich Tudor, but the only problem is that it will pain when you weir a layer after layer. And the rich could rest as much as they could…

  3. Rich Tudor
I want to be rich in the Tudor times because in the Tudor times,The rich can rest as long as they want. Also, they enjoy meat (a lot) and don't eat more vegetables.Noblemen and women don't work for more money, they actually get it.Rich merchants and noblemen are always rich if they work hard.

    Poor Tudor
I don't want to be poor because in their toilets, poor farmer had to take the dung and throw it away somewhere like river or sea!I hate doing that!!!!.Another reason is because in the Tudor times, they have to work hard in the hot burning sun like harvesting weed, cutting grass and poor people never ate or drank anything in the middle of their work! They ate carrot, small meat and all vegetables!

  4. I would rather be a rich Tudor because they had more privileges than the poor. Their clothing was very expensive then, because the material was shipped from other countries. Gold and Silver thread were sewn into the dress, as well as gemstones. The rich people showed that they're rich by their homes and wealth. Tudors had a toilet called “Privies” and didn't have many toiletries. Rich people got to take bath once in a while and the poor never did!!! The poor people strived to make a living. The rich people led a luxurious life. The rich men wore magnificent coats with big broad shoulders stuffed with whale bone. The rich women wore a chemise and on top they wore a long white skirt with whale bone lining. On top, they put a designed dress and finally a velvet dress with a velvet cloak. The dress had a V shape in which you could see the design of the dress below. Rich women had a small hole in their gown and rubbed sweet smelling flowers like lavender, jasmine and lily to smell good!!!!

  5. I prefer to be a rich Tudor as there clothes were far more comfortable than the poor. The poor people would die at about the age of thirty whereas the rich Tudors would die at around the age of sixty. The poor peple did lots of things which were far more worse than the rich Tudor ways those things were: hygiene, food and clothes. The rich Tudors only had a bath once a year but poor people didn’t have a bath ever. Sometimes the poor people were able to find old clothes of the rich people that had been thrown.

  6. I would like to live as a rich person during the Tudor Period because wealthy Tudors had a luxurious lifestyle. I enjoy a non vegetarian diet. Poor people in the Tudor Period ate vegetables whereas rich people ate expensive meat such as swan, peacock, geese, boar and venison. As a rich person I would certainly have enjoyed lavishing feasts.

I enjoy sports. If I were a poor person during the Tudor Period I would not be able to afford playing sports, besides I probably would not be allowed to participate. The wealthy enjoyed sports such as jousting, hunting and tennis.

I like to play in large gardens. Rich Tudors had large gardens, containing a maze, fountains and hedges shaped like animals. This would have been right up my street.

  7. Poor Tudors

Life for the poor in Tudor times was harsh.

poor TudorsThe poor had to work hard and struggled to survive. Many poor people lives lived in villages doing farm work or making cloth in their own homes for very little pay. They worked six days a week and only had holy days and public holidays off work.

When the harvest failed it was tempting for poor people to steal food. When people did break the law, they risked public flogging or being hanged.

    rose Four sorts of People

In 1577, William Harrison, a church minister, wrote a book called 'Description of England'. In it he describes four types of people living in Tudor England.

'We in England divide our people commonly into four sorts.' The first are gentlemen, which covers everyone from nobles to professionals; next come the citizens of the cities, who are free men with special privileges; next come the yeomen of the countryside; and finally the poor – farm workers, servants and vagrants, who have 'neither voice nor authority'.

    rose Food and drink

Poor TudorsThe poor living in cities survived on bread made from flour in mills alive with rats, and pies filled with spiced meats to disguise the fact that the meat was 'off'. Those living in the country had a little more choice because they could at the wheat and oats grown in the fields and fresh meat from hares and rabbits.

Meat was a luxury but poor people sometimes kept animals to provide milk, cheese and eggs. Both rich and poor ate fish, which was packed in barrels of salt to stop the fish going rotten.

Honey was used instead of sugar to sweeten desserts such as fruit pies.

Water was too polluted to drink, so the poor drank 'small beer' - watered ale - while the rich drank wine and sherry.

    rose Entertainment

Tudor people who were poor had little time for entertainment, but during their holidays and religious festivals they enjoyed singing, dancing, drinking and eating, as well as playing games and watching plays.

    globe theatre
    Globe Theatre, London

    dancing inside the globe theatre
    Dancing in the globe Theatre
    Morris Dancing
Morris dancing was usually performed by a group of men dressed in white. Sometimes they wore ribbons or bells on their legs and carried handkerchiefs or sticks.

rose Some of the poor became even poorer

It was often hard for the poor to afford things, since the cost of living kept going up. Life got harder when there was a bad harvest or when the disease of plague struck. There were not often enough jobs because the population was growing fast.

Helping the poor - Poor Laws

During the reign of Elizabeth l, many laws were passed to help the poor.

1563 — Justices of the Peace were given powers to raise compulsory funds for the relief of the poor. The poor were put into different categories

those who would work but could not:
They lived in their own homes but could not find a job. They were given help with food and clothes or by being given work in return for a wage.
those who could work but would not:
These were the (lazy) poor. They were punished e.g. whipped through the streets, publicly, until they learned the error of their ways.
those who were too old/ill/young to work:
They were looked after in almshouses, hospitals, orphanages or poor houses.
1572 — the first compulsory local poor law tax was imposed making the alleviation of poverty a local responsibility

1601 — the 'Elizabethan Poor Law' was passed

    The law offered help:

The able-bodied poor were to be set to work in a House of Industry. Materials were to be provided for the poor so they could do the job.
The idle (lazy) poor and vagrants were to be sent to a House of Correction or even prison.
Pauper children (poor children who received charity) would become apprentices.
The people who were unable to work due to disability, illness or old age were to be looked after either in almshouses, hospitals, poor houses or in their own homes.By Mushtaq

  8. I would like to be a rich Tudor because then I could eat well.If I have had money I would buy many things what helped me to survive. The rich people lived in bigger houses ,they had beautiful clothes and was easier for them to avoid smallpox because of having possibilities to visit doctors.

  9. If I lived in the Tudor period I would love to be a rich Tudor. The first reason is because they lived till they were 50-60 years, which was longer then the poor who lived till 30 to 35 years. The second thing is rich tudors lived in castles and palaces and the poor lived tiny huts.

The third reason is that rich had very awesome fashion and had better clothes then the poor. The poor had to make clothes out of animal skin like dears, leapords and wolfs. The fourth reason is because the rich had better hygine then thr poor.

I would like to be a rich because they wear fancy clothes and people knew that you were rich.

If you were rich you wouldn't get a sunburn only poor people get sunburns because they work outside all day.

Also could buy thing like food, water and expensive things like horses and cartages.

  12. I would like to be rich in Tudor times because I can live in big and comfortable houses in cities like London,Bristol or Norwich. At the times of Tudor the teacher used to give 50 strokes of the birch. Birch were a type of cane.If you are rich you can afford to hire a "whipping boy".The whipping boy will received the punishment. In Tudor times they eat with hands but rich people eat with silver and pewter spoons .The rich people also can eat all kinds of meat, fish and drink expensive wine.
Instead, poor people work six days in a week. They work hard and struggle in village doing farm work, making cloth for very little pay .They usually eat bread, cheese and onions. They eat with hands. They lived in small and uncomfortable houses. They cant go to school because just rich people could afford to go in school.

  16. Rich or Poor
I would rather be a rich Tudor because the rich lived to about their late fifties whereas the poor lived to their thirties. This was partly because they had poor diets. I would also like to be a rich Tudor because they had much finer, softer and cosier clothes and the poor had very tatty clothes because they could not afford any other. Instead of changing clothes every day the poor kept their clothes on and changed clothes only when the clothes worn out.

I would also prefer to be rich because the rich had brick houses so it would be hard to invade whereas the poor had wood houses which made it easier to invade. I would still like to be a rich Tudor even though they bathed once a year but being poor was worse because the poor never bathed. Not even once!!!!!!

  18. I would rather be a Rich Tudor πŸ˜„ because they had nice dresses and tunics to were. The poor people were forced to work like slaves in the garden. Queen Elizabeth I
had white powder on her face 😨to show that she didn't work in the garden and the powder poisened her and sadly died. Also the poor people don't wash very often and Queen Elizabeth I washed once a monthπŸ‘πŸ» and King Henry washed once a year.πŸ™ But the poor people never washed in their life. They wore clothes like robbers called a tunic with a hood and liripipe.

  21. I would rather be a rich tudor because they can buy whatever they want e.g pretty and expensive clothes and nice healthy foods which poor people cannot buy. Secondly Rich people have a huge house and big gardens and they have expensive furniture in it . I want to be a rich tudor because i can get my own big room which can be decorated with by my own choice E.G my favourite painting colour , my favourite furniture.

Thirdly i would like to be rich tudor because all the rich people have servants who look after them they dress them they braid their hair , do their make up and they can make nice food for them . Rich people do not need to do house work they just sit and relax and go for horse riding and hunting and picnic which poor people cannot do thats why i would like to be rich tudor.
